The Borough of West Paterson is one of sixteen municipalities in Passaic County. The Borough is located in the northeastern section of New Jersey and the lower end of the county, about 20 miles west of New York City.
Highway access is provided by Interstate 80 in the northern edge of town and U.S. 46 along the southern border. Natural features form the Borough’s other two borders: Garret Mountain on the east and the Passaic River on the west.
West Paterson doesn’t really lie west
of its namesake, the City of Paterson. Actually it is situated to the southwest of Paterson, New Jersey’s third most populous city. To the east is the City of Clifton. To the south and west are the Township of Little Falls and Totowa Borough, respectively.
The postal zip code, 07424, is shared with Little Falls. But, efforts have begun — again — to get the United States Postal Service to assign a unique zip code to West Paterson.
The Borough is approximately three square miles in size. The population in the 2000 U.S. Census was 10,987. A more recent estimate in 2004 shows a population of 11,298.
Though West Paterson is a highly developed municipality, with a mixture of residential, retail, office, and industrial properties, a significant portion of the Borough remains open space due to municipal parkland, two County parks, and a two reservoirs.
